Where were you when John F. Kennedy was assassinated? After a half century, this event still sparks discussion and controversy. Join us on October 18th at 6:30 p.m. for a balanced discussion of one of the pivotal events of the 20th century.
Program presenter David Jones, a resident of Minneapolis, follows his passion for history by giving presentations on key historical topics. Through slides, photos and film clips, David's narration of historical events is always interesting.
This program is open to the public, cost of $3/members and $6/non-members is payable at the door.
Open Enrollment Period
Beginning October 15 through December 7, 2017 the Open Enrollment period begins for the Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Medicare Part D). Trained health insurance counselors will be available at the Senior Center to assist individuals who have questions, want to enroll or want to make changes on their Medicare Part D coverage during the Open Enrollment period. Individual appointments can be made by calling the Senior Center at 332-7357. There is no cost or Senior Center membership necessary to access this service.
Fires and falls are a leading cause of injury and disability for older adults. Remembering When™ is designed to prevent injuries among older adults and help them live safely at home. On Wednesday, October 11th at 1:00 p.m. Faribault Fire Chief Dustin Dienst, will present a fun and interactive program that provides safety information through handouts, discussion and trivia games. Wills for Seniors
Do you have a will, health care directive or financial Power of Attorney? A workshop is being offered by Southern MN Regional Legal Service (SMRLS) for qualifying low income seniors in which volunteer attorneys will be on hand to help you answer the necessary questions, fill out the forms and have them notarized- at no cost to you. You will leave the clinic with all three completed legal documents.
The workshop will be held at the Senior Center on Wednesday, November 1. Registration is being done by SMRLS staff and can be done by calling 1-888-575-2954 and request an appointment for the Faribault Senior Center Will Workshop. No registrations will be made at the Senior Center. All participants must meet income guidelines.
Recycling Event Success
Thanks to everyone who participated in our recent Drop-Off Recycling Event which was held last Thursday. We are proud to announce that over 1,500 lbs of textiles and household goods were donated to this event. Thanks to the Senior Center Board members who assisted and also to Brian Coleman, the Service Learning Coordinator at Faribault High School, who arranged for a terrific group of students and school staff to help with the unloading.
Questions for Carla
Just a reminder that Carla Pearson, LSW, a Senior and Caregiver Advocate for Three Rivers Community Action will be back at the Senior Center on Thursday Oct. 12th. If you have questions for Carla consultations are free and open to the public, but an appointment is needed.
Carla has a large array of services that she can provide, including completing applications for various programs like Medical Assistance, Nutrition Assistance Program for seniors and Energy Assistance. She also has experience in working with those living with memory loss and can provide specialized education, screenings, resource referral and care planning for individuals or their caregivers.
What Does This Do?
AARP Driver Safety is launching a new education program called the Smart DriverTEK program which has been developed to help drivers understand how to use current and new vehicle safety features.
The Smart DriverTEK program was developed following a recent study that revealed that 76 percent of drivers aged 50 and older actively seek high-tech safety features. But what are all of these features and what do they do? During the class you will explore all of the elements that new vehicles now offer, including: Blind Spot Warning, Smart Head Lights, Reverse Monitoring Systems, Drowsy Driver Alert, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Assistive Parking Systems, Adaptive Cruise Control and Emergency Response System.
